Last weekend we drove all the way to North Wales to beautiful Snowdonia. The main purpose of this trip was to take part in the Go Below Challenge, an amazing caving experience in old slate mines organized by Go Below Underground Adventures. There are three different types of expeditions you can choose from: Go Below Challenge, Go Below Xtreme and Ultimate Xtreme. The level of difficulty for the Go Below Challenge is “medium” whilst for the other two it’s “tough”.
As I have never done anything like this and had no climbing experience we chose to do the Go Below Challenge. To get to the entrance of the mines we drove in a jeep with the instructors for 30 minutes and then continued by foot up the hills for another 30 minutes. The views were incredible and the walk itself was worth the trip.
We spent 3.5 hours in the underworld completing different challenges like boating across an underground lake, zip-lining through caverns, traversing over an abyss, abseiling, climbing up a waterfall and an 80 foot vertical shaft. Throughout the whole experience we were all being well looked after by the most experienced and qualified instructors. I would recommend this experience to anyone but you need to be reasonably fit and not afraid of heights to be able to fully enjoy it. I would love to complete the Xtreme and Ultimate Xtreme adventures but I will need to get some more climbing experience first to get used to the safety equipment and heights.
Another place worth visiting whilst in that area is the spectacular Swallow Falls in Betws-y-Coed which is only a 10 minute drive from the Go Below Underground Adventures main base.
As usual we chose a quirky glamping style accommodation and this time it was a Shepherd’s Hut in Minera – check out the photos of the hut and the stunning views below.
I had an amazing time and was very sad to leave. Due to the usual delays on the motorway our journey home took much longer than anticipated which resulted in me doing an excessive amount of online shopping. The parcels have just started arriving and I am not looking forward to returning at least half of these items as I ordered two different sizes of each piece.
My next expeditions are currently being organized and you will hear all about them in due course 🙂
