Another Bank Holiday weekend and adventure was calling.
This time we chose The Prince Regent, a stunningly restored 1894 showman’s carriage in Bodiam, East Sussex set on the hill overlooking Bodiam Castle as our accommodation. It was a truly relaxing experience to eat breakfast on the veranda admiring the spectacular views and listening to nothing more than the birds and the sound of the wind. The photos below show the interior of the carriage and the veranda with a kitchen and shower hut either side. Highly recommended for a tranquil break.
We spent a lovely sunny day in the ancient town of Rye full of picturesque narrow streets and little antique shops. If you are planning to stay in Rye and are not afraid of ghosts, check out The Mermaid Inn which is one of the oldest and most haunted hotels in Britain. It was featured in an episode of the Most Haunted TV series. The hotel’s cellars date from 1156 and the building was rebuilt in 1420. As we can find out from The Mermaid Inn’s own website there are five different ghosts residing in the hotel! Among the famous personalities who have visited the hotel are: Johnny Depp, Dame Judy Dench, Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando, Sophia Loren, Pierce Brosnan, Andy Garcia, Prince Edward and Elizabeth (Queen Mother).
We could not miss visiting the ruins of the magnificent medieval Bodiam Castle. This 14th century moated castle is a real gem among UK castles and it’s a great day out for the whole family.
I am already planning my next escapade and will keep you posted 🙂
