The Best Places Near LA To Spot Native Birds And Wildlife

Los Angeles may be one of the biggest cities on the planet, but it also makes a surprisingly effective base for a wildlife-watching vacation. It sits close to mountains, wetlands, deserts, and coastal habitats that support a wide range of native wildlife.

Many visitors do not realize how easily they can reach quiet places filled with birds, marine animals, and land mammals. A short drive gives you access to ecosystems that feel far removed from the city. Here’s how to find them.

Fix Your Transportation And Timings In Advance

Before you head out, think about transportation and timing. If you’re flying into LA, it’s worth noting that you will need your own transport to reach many of the locations on this list (or even to get around the city itself – LA is very car-centric). You can rent a car easily at the airport, but it is a good idea to sort out your rental car in advance. Otherwise you may find yourself facing delays and transport troubles that might put a damper on your wildlife watching plans.

Now, with that advice out of the way, let’s move onto the best spots for fauna and flora around LA!

Ballona Wetlands

Ballona Wetlands is one of the very best birding spots near the city. It’s a wide estuary near Marina del Ray that attracts herons, egrets, sandpipers, and raptors throughout the year. There are plenty of accessible rails and viewing platforms that give you clear lines of sight without having to take long hikes.

If birds aren’t your thing, the wetlands also support small mammals and reptiles that often appear near the water. Early morning visits are often best, because the birds tend to be most active during the cool early hours.

Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Malibu Lagoon has a diverse mix of ocean, tidal, and marshland habitats that create ideal conditions for shorebirds. Here, you’ll find large numbers of pelicans, terns, gulls, and snowy plovers, while the adjacent beach is great for spotting sea lions and dolphins.

The lagoon area is easy to navigate with plenty of natural viewpoints. All in all, Malibu Lagoon suits groups that want a relaxed outdoor setting with consistent wildlife activity.

El Dorado Nature Center

El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach is more of a curated experience than many other locations on this list, but you’ll also find forested paths, ponds, and quiet observation points here. The ponds attract ducks, grebes, turtles, and occasional herons. The surrounding trees support woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and songbirds throughout the year.

The calm layout encourages slow walks and easy wildlife spotting, and the center itself has plenty of family-friendly activities to help the kids get closer to nature.

Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve

Sepulveda Basin is ideal for spotting riparian and grassland species. The basin attracts a diverse range of birdlife, including hawks, owls, and wading birds. Away from the water, you’ll find rabbits, coyotes, and ground squirrels (the squirrels in particular are easy to spot at the fringes of the paths).

The reserve has many easily accessible loop trails, making it ideal for families with buggies or wildlife-lovers with mobility issues. The basin is especially interesting during migration seasons, when flocks descend to the reserve for rest and water during their long journeys north and south.

Topanga State Park

Topanga State Park, in the Santa Monica Mountains, is an incredibly biodiverse area with an abundance of animal and bird species. The park supports mule deer, coyotes, hawks, bobcats, mountain lions, scrub jays, horned lizards, and plenty of rare insects. Oak woodlands and chaparral covered slopes give great opportunities to view raptors and small mammals, while trails like Eagle Rock and Trippet Ranch give you open views without steep climbs.

Ultimately, Topanga suits hikers who want sweeping views and good chances to see native species. Make the most of your trip here by packing for a full day, and bringing plenty of water.

Point Dume Nature Preserve

At Point Dume on the Malibu coast you’ll find dramatic scenery and plenty of opportunities to see marine life and birds. The rocky headland attracts pelicans, cormorants, and shorebirds. In the waters beyond, you can often see migrating whales (depending on the season).

The cliffs and overlooks have plenty of easy viewing spots, and the tide pools on the beach below are fascinating for rockpool lovers at low tides. You’ll often see seals lounging on the rocks, as well.

Angeles National Forest

Angeles National Forest climbs up into the mountains and supports larger mammals, raptors, and songbirds. Visitors often see mule deer, chipmunks, and red tailed hawks along the forest roads.

Popular areas like Switzer Falls and Chantry Flat give you trails with open views and shaded segments for secluded bird watching. Higher areas are a lot cooler than the city, which makes it popular with wildlife seeking an escape from the valley heat during the summer.

San Joaquin Marsh And Wildlife Sanctuary

San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine is one of the best wetland birding locations in Southern California. The sanctuary has a range of  ponds and levee trails that create clear views of ducks, coots, stilts, and herons. Migratory species visit throughout the year, so time your visit according to the species you want to see.

The trails are flat and well marked, which helps you to explore easily, and the calm environment allows  for slow, careful observation without distractions. This is a great trip for serious birders and anyone who wants a quiet, wildlife rich outing.

Tips For Successful Wildlife Viewing

It’s a good idea to arrive early or late in the day, because wildlife activity in Southern California increases during cooler hours. Bring binoculars for clearer views, and wear neutral clothing to avoid drawing attention. Move slowly, keep noise low, and stay on marked paths.

Also research seasonal patterns so you know which species appear at different times of the year – for example, if you’re in California for migrating whale species, make sure you arrive during migratory seasons.

A Day Of Discovery Within Reach

Los Angeles sits near wetlands, mountains, forests, and coastline that support a rich mix of native wildlife. Ballona Wetlands, Malibu Lagoon, El Dorado Nature Center, Sepulveda Basin, Topanga, Point Dume, Angeles National Forest, San Joaquin Sanctuary, and more all offer strong chances to see birds and mammals in natural surroundings.

With a short drive and a thoughtful plan, you can enjoy a rewarding day of wildlife spotting and a refreshing break from city life.

Thanks for stopping by!
