How many countries have you visited in Europe? Whatever the figure might be, there’s a strong chance you’ve also visited the same places over and over. The likes of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden and others see waves of tourists each year – so why don’t you try something different?
Here’s a list of some underrated European countries you’ve probably never visited before, but should most certainly add to your travel agenda:
1. Bosnia And Herzegovina

A few Balkan countries make their way onto this list, mainly because they’re overshadowed by the travel hotspot that is Croatia. Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Croatia’s biggest neighbours, and it brings a delightful array of travel opportunities. Known for a rich culture, this country is full of amazing architecture, gorgeous waterfalls, rugged mountains and views over the Adriatic sea.
As seen on the Bosnian Voyager website, you also get plenty of cheap day trips to book, including tours around some of the country’s prime hotspots.
2. Albania

Another Balkan country, yet one with an entirely different travel experience from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located further south – and bordering Greece – Albania is home to some absolutely stunning beaches. You can see Italy from some points along the coast, meaning you get gorgeous views of the glittering sea.
It’s a true rising star in the European travel world, and if you have to visit just one place, it needs to be The Blue Eye Nature Reserve. You’ll witness an incredible natural phenomenon that creates clear blue waters up to fifty metres deep!
3. Liechtenstein

Austria and Switzerland are both great travel destinations that you know and love. However, there’s a teeny, tiny principality sitting between them: Liechtenstein. Expect all the classic tourism delights that you’d get from either of the bigger countries – gorgeous mountains, expansive hills, alpine landscapes, quaint villages and delicious cuisine – but on a much smaller and more relaxed scale.
The coolest thing about Liechtenstein is that you can drive through the whole country in around 20-40 minutes. This makes it perfect for road trips, particularly if you need to stop off on your way to Austria or Switzerland.
4. Slovenia

Okay, of all the countries on this list, Slovenia is the most well-known. That’s not really saying much, as hardly anyone considers it when travelling around Europe! Still, you may have heard of some Slovenian travel delights, namely the iconic Lake Bled. Many more delights unfold as you make your way throughout this country – it’s filled with picturesque mountains and ski resorts, stunning beaches, amazing vineyards and some gorgeous architecture.
Its relatively central location also means it’s not far from classic tourist hotspots such as Italy, Austria and Croatia. If you’re looking to tour the continent, this could be a great starting point.
5. Gibraltar

Gibraltar is one of those places you sometimes forget exists, mainly because it’s so small – and also because it’s effectively attached to the Spanish coast. While technically a British overseas territory, Gibraltar is definitely more of a Spanish affair – which is why it’s a great hidden gem.
The standout attraction is the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, a massive limestone mountain with caves and a nature reserve, but you’ll also find other things to do. It’s home to many festivals and celebrations, though the main draw here is that you can enjoy a holiday that feels like Spain, only minus the thousands of tourists.
6. Andorra

Speaking of Spain, if you look between it and France, you’ll find the small principality of Andorra. This tiny area only has a population of just over 81,000, yet it is quickly becoming one of the most underrated gems in Europe. Nestled within the Pyrenees mountains, Andorra is a great ski holiday destination – or a travel place for avid hikers.
It also has some stunning museums, castles and churches that are well worth checking out. Definitely a top pick for mountain-based holidays, particularly if you’re keen to discover Andorra’s famous mountain gastronomy.
7. Latvia

To the north of Europe, you have the Baltic Sea, and Latvia is one of the countries bordering it. As you can imagine, this makes it pretty cold and there’s a lot of snowfall; perfect for a cute winter holiday. You get a great blend of urban tourism meets historic and natural sightseeing opportunities.
The capital city, Riga, is bustling with great shops and restaurants – but also has a UNESCO-listed Old Town for you to wander through. Further afield, you’ll find things like the Gauja National Park; a truly beautiful place full of thick forests, natural springs and local wildlife.
8. Faroe Islands

Technically speaking, the Faroe Islands are part of Denmark, but it definitely feels like its own country, so it stays on this list. The remoteness of the Faroe Islands makes it fantastic – you feel super relaxed while you’re there and can enjoy the Scandinavian vibes without too many other tourists.
If you love dramatic waterfalls, walking across undulating hills, and a general cosy, wintery vibe, then this is the place for you.
9. Slovakia

As a landlocked country, Slovakia doesn’t always attract that many tourists – yet it’s absolutely gorgeous. Bratislava is one of the most picturesque capital cities in the world – and the entire country is home to some wonderful hiking routes. It’s one of those countries that’s perfect for walking holidays, or if you just fancy travelling to different castles or old ruins.
You get a sense of being transported back in time here, and that’s a lovely switch-up from the fast-paced life you’re used to. Don’t sleep on Slovakia just because it doesn’t have any beaches; it’s still great to visit in the summer, though its true beauty comes out in autumn for sure.
It’s amazing when you think about all the places in Europe that you’ve either never travelled to or never even thought of visiting. So many popular tourist destinations dominate your mind when you’re planning a trip, so maybe you should think outside the box?
