What Is Blue Marble
The choice of the background featuring the swirls of blue marble used for the app icons was inspired by the picture of Earth taken in 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft on its way to the Moon.
The photo was taken from a distance of about 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) from the planet’s surface and was named “The Blue Marble“. It is one of the most iconic photos of Earth from space and reproduced images in history.
